Project objective: The newly established project, Empowering Youth and Women to Strengthen Rural Health Systems Against Extreme Heat and Air Pollution, is designed to build lasting community resilience across 25 rural villages in Savannakhet Province.

Building Climate-Resilient Health Systems

As extreme heat events and seasonal air pollution increasingly threaten public health in rural Laos, this initiative combines grassroots action with nature-based and locally developed solutions. Over its two-year duration, the project will directly benefit more than 12,500 villagers, prioritizing vulnerable groups, including households with young children, pregnant and lactating women, elderly residents, and individuals living with chronic health conditions.
Key project interventions focus on strengthening local capacity and establishing sustainable early warning and response networks:
  • Youth-Led Early Warning Systems: Mobilizing young people to monitor and communicate environmental health risks.
  • Grassroots Climate Action: Establishing 25 Village Action Groups (VAGs) and 25 Women’s Tree Planting Groups to deploy local heat-reduction solutions.
  • Healthcare Capacity Building: Training 150 Village Health Workers and equipping 25 rural health centers to manage climate-related health cases.
  • School Engagement: Mobilizing 25 primary school "Youth Guardians" to promote health awareness among students and families.
  • Data-Informed Advocacy: Utilizing field-level data to engage local stakeholders and support evidence-based health policies.

"By bringing together youth, women, and local health workers, this project creates a unified network capable of protecting the most vulnerable from the immediate and long-term impacts of extreme weather and air pollution."
