Total Control of the Epidemic

The approach

The TC TB Active Case Finding project is based on Humana People to People's Total Control of the Epidemic (TCE) concept. Like the Farmers' Clubs concept, TCE has been developed and tested throughout HPP countries worldwide and is applied to combat TB, HIV/AIDS and malaria. TCE is centred on the idea that only the people themselves can rid themselves from epidemics, i.e. a disease control program can only be successful if communities are actively involved.

HPP Laos Field Officers are screening villagers for TB symptoms. If someone shows to have symptoms, they are referred to public health services for testing - and their social contacts are also examined for symptoms

Of the three epidemics to which TCE applies, HPP Laos is currently only working in tuberculosis. The organisation incorporates Village Health Workers in all activities and mobilises communities to support their TB-affected peers, for instance through Trios: TB clients and two family members or friends are trained in TB awareness, and ensure daily medication intake of the client together. They also support the client to improve their nutrition through cultivation of vegetables and fruit in home gardens and the raising of small animals for increased protein in their diets.
